Freckles

Those little freckles in the sky are birds. This snapshot I took at dusk captured only a tiny portion of the long ribbon across the sky. There were literally bujillions of them. The birds are flying south, I think. If they aren't flying south, then I think they are flying to the mall.

It's hard to tell directions around here.

I think they heard about the crazy weather that is heading east and decided to get out of town!

Are you absolutely sure your camera lens was clean? Wow. It looks like they were flying very high.

I grew up in a flat flat flat desert land and I simply learned to tell directions. North, south, east, west, perfectly logical. Then I moved to Colorado and everything was based on your relation to the mountains. Turn so the mountains are on your right, left, behind you. After three years of that I am now no longer able to tell directions without mountains... geesh.

I've seen those giant packs of birds before, and what's amazing to me is how they undulate and flow as they fly, changing directions, swooping and rising, all in unison like someone is shouting signals, "UP! Right! SPIN!!!"

The only thing that would complete this picture as my ultimate nightmare would be the birds flying down to peck my eyes out.

Which I am sure they did right after you snapped this photo.

(Not my eyes - yours.)
